OLD GEMS:SCARFACE
From the opening scene when Al Pacino is interrogated by the U.S. cops and then sent to a camp for Cuban refugees, you know for sure that something exciting is in store for you. Of course, what happens later is a roller coster ride for sure.
I had originally seen the Godfather series and had not the remotest idea of the great acting prowess that
Al Pacino possessed. While Al Pacino potrayed a subtle and dangerous mafia don in the series, I wanted to see some real action that I had heard of. Like any other net surfer, I found out this 1983 classic.
And surprisingly for me, I saw an altogether different Pacino. Pacino is more rough, more abusive, more frightening. He is said as a 'peasent' by his Boss's man as he is a poor refugee from Cuba. But his intentions are clear, and he takes shit from nobody. It is an attitude that reflects the charisma of a true movie gangster.
I believe almost everyone who has heard of this movie must have seen it. For those who haven't I'll give a brief synopsis of the plot. Of the 125,000 cubans who immigrated to Miami Florida in 1980, Tony Montana (Al Pacino) is one. His best friend Manny arranges for a deal with a wealthy man named Frank Lopez, for them to each obtain a green card. Pacino has to kill Lopez's enemy, which he does happily.
And so begins his rise as a gangster ,including his meeting with the beautiful Elvira Hancock
(Michelle Pfeiffer). For those interested to know more should see the movie and watch out especially for the intense climax.
I would rate the performances in this movie better then the overall plot. Another consideration to be taken is that it is an early gangster movie, and thus is a mileston in crime fiction, showing the greed and ambition of a rising gangster. Like Al Pacino says in the movie: 'The World is coming and everything in it.'
